May 9th Eat and Live

Reading Proverbs 9:1-18

Imagine yourself working in a hot dry field. The dust is getting everywhere, under your finger nails in your hair and coating the inside of your mouth. Your eyes sting, but there is so much work to do, the only moisture is the sweat beading your brow. The sun is beating down on you and there is no shade.

In the distance you see someone walking towards you, you squint into the sun, it’s a water seller! Two beautiful buckets of clear, pure water hanging on a yoke across his shoulders…..Sadly you have no money, not till this field is harvested. You notice his hands; they are pierced. The water seller, cries out,

“Come, all you who are thirsty,
come to the waters;
and you who have no money,
come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
without money and without cost.
Why spend money on what is not bread,
and your labor on what does not satisfy?
Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good,
and your soul will delight in the richest of fare” (Isaiah 55:1-2 NIV 1984)

You be crazy not to drink …. wouldn’t you?

Jesus Said

“It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me. No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father. I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life.

I am the bread of life.

Your forefathers ate the manna in the desert, yet they died. But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which a man may eat and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.” ( John 6:45-51 NIV 1984)

For memorisation

“Come, eat my food
and drink the wine I have mixed.
Leave your simple ways and you will live;
walk in the way of insight.”

Father, I simply come to you this morning, to your Son, relying on your Spirit. I want to renounce the world’s folly, my folly and the folly I see around me. I choose you again I want to listen to your voice. I come again to Jesus, my living bread. Lord, please guard my ways today so that I don’t turn from you, silence folly’s voice. Help me fix my eyes upon Jesus and look full on his beautiful face that the things of earth will draw strangely dim in the light of his Glory and Grace. Amen

  • Rachel Prentice says:

    So many distractions. So often try to ‘do it my way’. But what I should do is ‘come’. It works.

  • Janet Rowlinson says:

    V.7-9 particularly speaks to me. Telling me to think before I speak and to pick my battles carefully. I often get hurt because I rise to the bait far too quickly.

  • Mary Dicker says:

    When. I read this today, I remembered being a little girl in Sunday School and singing ‘Running over, running over, my cup’s full and running over.’ The extravagant love of God who fills us to overflowing.
